1. Cabo de São Vicente

Cabo de São Vicente in Sagres is a cape located on the south-western tip of Portugal also known as “the end of the world”. It is well known for its beautiful scenery and historical importance. There is a 15th-century fortress, built to protect the Portuguese coast from pirate attacks. As the fortress became a tourist attraction, you will find there a little snack bar and a gift shop inside. 

Cabo de São Vicente is also a spectacular sunset spot that will offer you  an unforgettable experience. It is very popular among locals and tourists alike, as it offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, the cliffs, the beaches, and the nearby town of Sagres. 

The cape is about 7 km from the city of Sagres, which is a quick 10 mins drive, and has plenty of parking space to leave the car. The most popular sunset spot is at the lighthouse, where you have panoramic views of the cape, the beaches, and the sea. Alternatively, you can wander along the path that leads to the top of the cliffs and find your perfect sunset spot there.

2. Fortaleza de Sagres

Fortaleza de Sagres is another excellent sunset spot around Sagres. It is located just right outside of the city, about a 5 minutes drive.

The fortress is an impressive and imposing structure, built in the 15th century by Prince Henry the Navigator. It is a reminder of Portugal’s rich maritime heritage and its prominent role in the Age of Exploration. It is a great place for history lovers. You can visit the inside of the fortress and get to know its history for 6 euros or just see it from the outside.

The views from Fortaleza de Sagres are spectacular, especially at sunset. From the ramparts of the fortress, you can watch the sun sinking into the Atlantic Ocean, painting the skies in hues of red, orange, and pink. 

The Cape of São Vicente is also visible in the distance, with its magnificent rocky cliffs. You can bring some snacks and drinks and enjoy the evening getting to know the history of Portugal with an amazing sunset view.

3. Praia do Tonel

Praia do Tonel is one of our favorite sunset spots in Sagres. It is located about 2 mins drive from the city. The beach is very popular especially among surfers and bodyboarders, as it is known for its strong, consistent waves.  It is situated in a protected area, so the beach is relatively quiet and peaceful. 

The Praia do Tonel is a great spot for a romantic night out or a family day at the beach. The surrounding cliffs offer a stunning backdrop to the beach, and the sunset is an unforgettable experience. Just take some food and drinks and get ready for an amazing evening at the beach finished with an amazing sunset.
